Who Actually Moves Your Things
Two companies are involved in any brokered move, and knowing which is which protects you.
The motor carrier holds the operating authority, owns the trucks, employs the crew, issues your bill of lading, and is legally responsible for your belongings from the moment they are loaded. The broker arranges that relationship.
What we handle: building your inventory, pricing the move against carrier tariffs, verifying the authority and insurance of the carrier we place you with, and holding the file until your last box is inside. What the carrier handles: the pack, the load, the drive, and the delivery. Their published tariff sets the charges, and you can inspect that tariff from the carrier on reasonable request.
Federal rules require brokers to say plainly that they are brokers. We do it here, in your quote, and in our footer. If another company gets vague when you ask which one they are, you have your answer.
Why Use a Broker Instead of Calling a Carrier Direct
The doubt is always the same. Why involve a middleman when you could call a moving company yourself.
Here is what that overlooks. Calling a carrier directly means asking one company whether it can take your job on your dates. You get one answer, one tariff, and one truck schedule. Their salesperson is paid to close you, which means the incentive is to say yes now and sort the calendar out later. When that calendar slips in July, you have already paid a deposit and you have no second option.
Booking through us puts your move in front of a network instead. Your route, your dates, your shipment size, and your access situation get matched to a carrier that genuinely fits. If the fit is not there, we reprice with someone else, which is a much better position to be in two weeks before your lease ends.
Small and mid-size shipments finally get taken seriously. A partial load does not fill a trailer, so a carrier with an empty truck would rather have a full four-bedroom house than your one-bedroom apartment. Booked direct, you wait. Through a network, your shipment goes to a carrier already running that lane with space left to fill, which is often the cheaper answer as well as the faster one.
Awkward routes stop being your problem. Rural pickup, rural delivery, or a lane a particular carrier simply does not run. One “no” ends a direct booking. It only reprices a brokered one.
Peak season becomes survivable. From late May through early September, and in the last week of any month, capacity vanishes. During those windows we are calling carriers who have availability rather than waiting on the one company you happened to find first.
The vetting is already done. Authority status, insurance, and safety record get checked before a carrier is near your shipment. Doing that yourself means pulling FMCSA records and knowing what a bad one looks like, for every company you consider.
One point of contact throughout. Same file, same people, from quote to delivery. When something needs escalating you are not explaining your move from scratch to a dispatcher who has never heard of you.

How Your Long Distance Estimate Is Built
Three estimate types exist under federal rules and they behave completely differently at your door.
Non-binding. An educated projection. Final charges follow actual weight and services performed, so the number can rise. You are protected at delivery: the carrier cannot require more than 110 percent of a non-binding estimate before unloading, with the balance billed afterwards, typically due within 30 days.
Binding. A fixed price for the inventory and services listed. It holds unless you change something. Hand the crew three extra boxes at the door and the carrier can issue a revised binding estimate before loading.
Binding not-to-exceed. A ceiling. You pay actual charges if they land lower, and never more than the estimate. This is the most customer-favourable of the three, and the one worth asking for.
When you compare companies, do not compare the dollar figure first. Compare the estimate type and whether the inventory behind it is complete. A cheap non-binding number produced from a two-minute phone call is not a better price. It is a worse forecast.
What actually moves the number: shipment weight or cubic volume, mileage, access at both addresses including stairs, elevators, long carries from door to truck, and whether a tractor-trailer can legally reach you. Packing services and materials. Specialty items such as pianos, safes, gun safes, hot tubs, and pool tables. Season and date. Storage in transit if your dates do not line up. And the valuation coverage you select.
Most overages are not scams. They come from items left off the inventory, or an access issue nobody mentioned at quote stage. Walk every room including the garage, attic, shed, and under the stairs, describe both addresses honestly, and your estimate will hold.
What a Tariff Is
A tariff is the carrier’s published schedule of rates and rules. Every FMCSA-authorized household goods carrier maintains one. It governs linehaul charges, accessorial charges such as shuttles, long carries, stair carries and bulky article fees, plus the valuation options available to you and the conditions attached to each.
Your price is not a figure a salesperson invented. It is that tariff applied to your specific shipment, which is why you are entitled to inspect it on reasonable request and why any quote worth trusting can be traced back to one. If a company cannot tell you which carrier’s tariff produced your number, ask again.
From Load Day to Delivery Day
Before load day. You receive an order for service listing your dates, inventory, estimate type, and valuation selection. Read it properly. Confirm the delivery spread in writing. Tell us about anything that has changed since the survey, because a revision now costs nothing and a surprise on the day costs money.
Set aside whatever is not going. Carriers cannot transport hazardous materials, and the list runs wider than people expect: propane tanks, aerosols, paint, pool chemicals, lighter fluid, ammunition, nail polish remover. Perishables and houseplants rarely survive a long haul either.
Load day. The crew inventories your shipment and tags each item with a condition code. Walk with them. Those codes become the baseline for any claim later, so if something reads “scratched” and it is not, say so before you sign anything.
Then you sign the bill of lading. This is your contract with the carrier, not with Hercules. It should show your estimate type, valuation selection, delivery spread, and both addresses. Never sign a blank or incomplete one.
In transit. Interstate carriers consolidate several households onto one trailer, which is precisely why long distance moving is affordable and precisely why you get a delivery spread rather than a fixed date. Your file stays with us throughout. If your dates shift or you suddenly need storage, tell us early rather than at the destination.
Delivery day. The balance is due before unloading, subject to the 110 percent rule on non-binding estimates. The crew checks off your inventory tags as items come off the truck. Record any damage or missing item on the inventory sheet at delivery, in writing, before the crew leaves. Signing a clean delivery receipt and calling the next morning is the weakest position you can file a claim from.

Valuation Coverage: What "Insurance" Actually Means Here
Carriers provide valuation, not insurance, and the difference is not a technicality.
Released value protection comes at no charge and pays 60 cents per pound per article. A 40 pound television settles at $24 under it. That is the federally mandated minimum and it is genuinely minimal.
Full value protection costs extra. The carrier becomes liable for repair, replacement, or cash settlement based on the item’s value, subject to the terms and any deductible you choose.
Separate third-party moving insurance is also available if you want cover beyond what the carrier offers.
Make the choice deliberately and in writing before load day. Items of extraordinary value such as jewellery, currency, and documents normally require a separate high-value inventory form, and coverage will not apply to anything you did not declare.
Your Rights as an Interstate Shipper
Federal regulation gives you specific, enforceable rights on any interstate household goods move. Your carrier must provide Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move and the Ready to Move brochure. Both are linked from our Consumer Information page and free from FMCSA.
In short: you are entitled to a written estimate, to inspect the carrier’s tariff, to request a reweigh of your shipment if you dispute the weight on a non-binding estimate, to file a loss or damage claim with the carrier within nine months of delivery, to a claim acknowledgment within 30 days and a resolution within 120, and to a neutral arbitration program the carrier must offer for disputes.
You can also verify anyone before you book. Look up any DOT or MC number in the FMCSA licensing database and confirm the authority type says broker or carrier as claimed. Brokers must maintain $75,000 in financial security, and as of January 2026 sureties must notify FMCSA promptly if that security drops below the floor. Check ours. We would rather you did.

How much do long distance movers cost?

How far in advance should I book a long distance move?
